How to Write a Resume for a US Remote Job (With Examples)
A resume that works in your home country won't automatically work for US employers. Here's what to change.
US Resumes Are Different
If you're used to CVs in Europe, Asia, or Latin America, the US resume format will feel surprisingly minimal. No photos. No date of birth. No marital status. One to two pages max. That's intentional ā US hiring is heavily influenced by ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) that scan for keywords before a human ever reads your application.
The US Resume Format
Length
One page if you have under 10 years experience. Two pages maximum for senior roles. More than two pages will hurt you.
Sections (in order)
- Contact Info ā Name, email, LinkedIn, GitHub/portfolio. No address needed for remote roles. No photo.
- Summary (optional but useful) ā 2ā3 sentences describing who you are and what you're applying for.
- Skills ā List technologies, tools, and frameworks. This is what ATS scans.
- Work Experience ā Reverse chronological. Bullet points with measurable impact.
- Education ā Brief. Degree, institution, year. Skip if you have 5+ years experience.
The Most Important Rule: Quantify Everything
US hiring managers want to see impact, not just responsibilities. Compare these two bullets:
- ā "Responsible for improving application performance"
- ā "Reduced API response time by 40% by implementing Redis caching, improving user retention by 12%"
If you don't have exact numbers, estimate. "Improved load time by ~50%", "Managed a team of 4", "Served 10,000+ daily active users".
ATS Keywords
Read the job description carefully. Copy the exact terminology they use. If they say "React.js", don't write "ReactJS". If they say "cross-functional collaboration", include that phrase. ATS systems do exact-match searches.
Remote-Specific Tips
- Add "Remote" to your current/past job titles if applicable: "Software Engineer (Remote)"
- Mention async communication tools you've used: Slack, Notion, Linear, Jira
- If you've worked across timezones, mention it ā "Collaborated with teams across US, EU, and APAC timezones"
Cover Letter for Remote Roles
Keep it to 3 short paragraphs: why this role, why you're qualified (with one specific example), and a confident close. Mention that you're comfortable with async communication and remote collaboration tools. Don't apologize for being in a different timezone ā frame it as a feature ("available for overlap during EST afternoons").
